The more you know: Getting faucets online

The emergence of sites like Taobao has drastically changed the way we shop for things, leading us to increasingly seek for convenience.

This convenience has offered us so much – even to the extent of furniture shopping where we buy items from sofas and dining tables right to bathroom and kitchen products like faucets.

Furthermore, with the recent circuit breaker measures that the government has put in place, I’m sure that even more will flock online to get their purchases done, all in the comforts and safety of their home.

However, while you hunker down with your family in this period, we also advise you to shop responsibly!

While not much harm comes from buying clothes or furniture for our daily use, it is important to take special caution to products like electrical and plumbing (think: faucets, taps, toilet bowls) appliances as they may put your life or your loved ones’ in danger.

This could be due to faulty products being shipped over or simply that products do not comply with local safety standards and long-term use could be detrimental to your health.

For one, when you purchase faucets directly from overseas sellers, you run the risk that these products have not been tested locally by PUB.

What are the risks that comes with that? Lead traces in the water that you use and drink and in serious cases, lead poisoning. This happens when manufacturers try to cut costs and use a higher-than-accepted concentration of lead in their production.

Lead consumption is especially harmful to young children where it would affect the development of the brain and nervous system. Adults also need to be wary where long-term exposure leads to an increased risk of high blood pressure and kidney damage.

It is always better to be safe than sorry. With infrastructures in place in Singapore to keep our waters clean, we should also play our part by ensuring that the faucets we get don’t ruin this for ourselves.

Play your part and keep yourself and your families safe by buying faucets from local sellers. By doing so, you can rest easy knowing that the products you are getting have gone through stringent testing by local authorities to make sure that they are safe for use.
